Technique Selection

The Technique Selection tool allows you to answer a number of questions to define your composite inspection requirement. Selecting View Results at any time will give a list of techniques that our experts suggest could have applicability to your problem, together with an overall score or ranking. You can see the detailed scores for any technique and links take you straight to more detailed information on the listed methods. The scores used in the model have been put together by a panel of experts and will be subject to an independent audit.  Click the links below to download a user guide or see a copy of the Audit report. A spreadsheet with the full scores and comments post audit and Summary by Defect Types can also be downloaded

How to Use the Technique Selection Tool

  1. Answer as many questions as you need to define your inspection requirement.
  2. Click on View Results at any time to see a list of techniques that the IKB thinks may have application to your problem.
  3. Click the link to take you to more details of the inspection technique and assess how suitable it may be to the specific features of your problem.
  4. Separate lists are given for Common and for Specialised or Developmental  techniques.   The project team felt it would be confusing to show these specialised methods in the same list as common NDE methods used on a routine basis. Much less is known about the Specialised  and Developmental techniques, though they may well be worth consideration for specific applications..
  5. Click Clear Answer or Clear Results if you want to remove an answer or remove all answers and start again from scratch

You do not need to answer all of the questions in all of the categories, but by entering as much information as possible the recommendations will be refined. Thus, if you only answer the first question ("situation"), then all techniques will be recommended! Answer more questions to provide further information about your scenario, and hence obtain a shorter list.

Click on a question to enter an answer to that question. If you can't see the names of the questions, click on a category name to reveal the questions in that category. Once you have answered the question you can go on to another question/category.

To leave a question unanswered simply don't click on any of the options in that question. If you want to leave a question blank that you have already answered, click the Clear button. If you wish to remove all answers to previous questions, click the Clear All button.

When you click the View Results button you will be presented with a ranked list of NDT techniques considered applicable to your scenario. The percentage "score" given for each technique is an indication of how well the technique should perform on your scenario. By clicking on an item from this list you will be able to view the information stored on that inspection technique.

Scoring reports can be obtained for any technique currently included in the IKB. These reports give, for the selected technique, the individual scores obtained for each answer you have provided. (These individual scores are multiplied together to obtain the overall score for the technique which is shown in the ranked list of recommended techniques).

To obtain a scoring report, first obtain a list of recommended techniques, then select the technique you are interested in from the drop down list at the bottom of the page, and then click the View Report button. You will be able to see a table of scores and comments giving the basis for the scoring.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can also obtain a scoring report for any of the techniques in the recommended list by clicking on the scoring report picture given for each each technique.
